Turns out, How Did We Get Here is also a pretty good question to ask when we look around at all the people who helped us make this record. Records may have two names on the front, but they are never made by two people — this one carries the fingerprints, hearts, talent, meals, laughter, encouragement, and generous love of so many people who showed up for us and these songs.

Jayne & Beckie — You breathed life into these songs and believed in us, sometimes before we quite knew how to believe in ourselves. Every Post-it note, shared meal, wild idea and conversation is forever woven into this record, but your beloved friendship is the part we treasure most. Charles — There’s not another soul we would have wanted walking us through this. You gathered the perfect band, found the record inside the songs, and made every session feel like magic. You made the process as meaningful as the record itself. We got a hell of a record, one of the greatest recording experiences of our lives, and somewhere along the way, a really good friend. Tom — You are the glue running through this entire record, saving us more times than we can count. Marc & John — Thank you for creating bass and drum parts that somehow felt like they had always belonged there. You never just played the songs; you listened to them, and that made all the difference. Philippe — Your brilliant soul shines through every instrument you touch. Thank you for listening so deeply, making these songs more beautiful. Kevin — From engineering and helping produce our very first EP to bringing your excellence and creativity to this record all these years later, having you here for this chapter means more than you know. Kim K — Your voice and friendship have been a comfort to us for years, and you have that rare gift of making a room warmer, a song better and, usually, a whole lot funnier. Thank you for bringing your unmistakable voice, enormous heart and all that laughter to this record. Vicki — Some voices you hear; yours you feel, and we’re so grateful to have a little piece of that soul forever woven into this record. Robert — Your encouragement reminded us that we really are all in this together. Thank you for bringing all your goodness — and that glorious voice — into the room. Shelly — Our beautiful, free, wild spirit — you flew in from the UK just in time to sing on this record. Your resilience, wild heart and one-of-a-kind voice are etched into our musical lives, but even more deeply, your friendship is etched into us. Jen — Thank you for all the years you've shared your community with us and encouraged us to share our story and songs with the world. And for lending your words to "Gold Stars": we are honored. Every gold star we've got is yours. Geoffrey — Thank you for opening your artist studio to us as our songs were finding their shape. Charlie — Our favorite intern — we loved having you in the room and being part of this chapter with us. We can’t wait to see all the beautiful things you’ll create, and when you’re wildly successful, please remember we knew you when. Alex — Knowing “I Hear You Calling” is the route you take means we'll forever hear that song and picture you making your way home. Wes + Linda Yoder, Melissa Goodson, Jen Cooke + Amy Law, and Dean + David Logan — Thank you for opening your homes and hearts to us around your tables, beds to land in, late-night conversations and so much laughter. You gave these songs — and us — places to rest along the way and made being away from home feel a whole lot more like home. Steve A — You believed in us and supported us before almost anyone, when there wasn’t a clear road ahead. You believed when it was still a dirt path, and we will never forget it. Nicole + Michael Sloan — You two have poured more gasoline on our fire than probably anyone by continually looking for ways to help us move forward. You and your community are forever in our hearts. Russ Harrington + Brent Harrington — Thank you for getting us through 100-degree heat that alone deserves an album credit. Your artistry, patience and good humor got us through every sweaty minute and gave this record a face. Mary Beth — What a gift to have you in our corner. Thank you for enduring the heat and keeping us glowing instead of looking like we were in a sweat lodge. We're forever grateful! Emily Y — You stopped in at just the right moment to encourage our hearts and these songs, and somehow we found our long-lost little sister in the process. St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Burnsville, NC — Thank you for loving us enough to let us go. We carry you in our hearts everywhere. “Let it Be Love” is dedicated to you all.

I lost all my gold stars

Only to find what I was searching for

One by one shattered on the ground

I look up to see what I found

I lost all my gold stars

Only to learn what I was longing for

I was enough

The day I was born

Odds and evens

Solids and stripes

I'll be your eight ball

You cue that shot

I'm ready to break

I'm ready to roll

You sink or scratch

Lose or win

The way you hold that pool stick

I'm all in

I'm ready to break

I'm ready to roll

Somebody hit the jukebox

Play rock and roll

Take a shot, make a stroke

Hit it hard, I've got all night

Let's play this game, forget the rules

I'm in your corner pocket

Call me your billiard fool

You aim and hit

Hard or slow

What's on the table?

I don't know, but I'm ready to break

I'm ready to roll

Somebody kick that jukebox

Play funky soul

Take a shot, make a stroke

Hit it hard, I've got all night

Let's play this game, forget the rules

I'm in your corner pocket

Call me your billiard fool

So take a shot, make a stroke

Hit it hard, I've got all night

Let's play this game, forget the rules

I'm in your corner pocket,

Call me your billiard fool

I'm in your corner pocket

I'm in your corner pocket

Call me your billiard fool

Raised in Georgia

On a peanut field

Raised thinkin' cotton

Was made in a mill

Not knowing

I was hidden from the truth

Raised in Mississippi

An hour down the road

From all that was burnin'

Freedom Rider ’64

Brown-eyed girl

Not knowing

I was hidden from the truth

Raised in church

On the front pew

Raised in the choir

Singing every Hallelujah

Not knowing

There was more to the truth

We don't know it all, but we know what's true

A different Hallelujah is breaking through

We're still here, still alive

Raise your hands, raise 'em high

To the truth you hold inside

Rise, rise, rise, rise, rise

Rise, rise, rise, rise, rise

Turns out I'm not broken

Just bent from what I believed

The truth comes to save you

It takes something when it leaves

What felt like solid ground

Was fear all the same

I let go of needing all the answers

I'll take joy over pain

We don't know it all, but we know what's true

A different Hallelujah is breaking through

We're still here, still alive

Raise your voice, raise it high

We don't know it all, but we know what's true

A different Hallelujah is breaking through

We're still here, still alive

Raise your hands, raise 'em high

Rise, rise, rise, rise, rise

Rise, rise, rise, rise, rise

We don't know it all, but we know what's true

A different Hallelujah is breaking through

We're still here, still alive

Raise your voice, raise it high

To the truth we hold inside

We don't know it all, but we know what's true

A different Hallelujah is breaking through

We're still here, still alive

Raise your hands, raise 'em high

To the truth you hold inside

Rise, rise, rise, rise, rise

Rise, rise, rise, rise, rise

Rise, rise, rise, rise, rise

Rise, rise, rise, rise

How did we get here

Never wanna leave

Was it sitting backstage with nothing to do

Passing the time next to you

How did we get here

Never wanna leave

Was it Texas on that Saturday night

Sipping tequila, feeling all right

Travelled the world over

Never found a four-leaf clover

’Til I picked you

Nothin's the same and I can't go back

Heaven made a match, that's a fact

I bid farewell to the broken heart I knew

Nothin' holds a candle to how we burn

Life's got a way with twists and turns

How did we get here and never wanna leave

How do you know love

Will never run out

Is it poppin' champagne on Sunday morn

Fallin' asleep before the storm

How do you know love

We'll make it to the end

Is it floatin' down the Grand Canal

Mezcal in a Mexican town

Travelled the world over

Never found a four-leaf clover

’Til I picked you

Nothin's the same and I can't go back

Heaven made a match, that's a fact

I bid farewell to the broken heart I knew

Nothin' holds a candle to how we burn

Life's got a way with twists and turns

How did we get here and never wanna leave

Nothin's the same and I can't go back

Heaven made a match, that's a fact

I bid farewell to the broken heart I knew

Nothin' holds a candle to how we burn

Life's got a way with twists and turns

How did we get here and never wanna leave

How did we get here and never wanna leave

How did we get here and never wanna leave

I just crossed the Colorado border

New Mexico’s in sight

Piñon wood is burning like the embers of my heart

And this old car won't start

An old mechanic told me

Sometimes life brings delay

I'll get you up and running by midnight

I can see a need to get on your way

I hear you calling

Time to leave the road behind

And I'll drive all through the night

To see your face at sunrise

Grabbed a bite in Amarillo

Home Plate Diner has survived

Cherry pie and a hot cup of coffee

Miss Betty's still wise

I thought of going through Memphis

But the king and queen are gone

I feel the pull of that South Jackson highway

Where we made love and we wrote songs

I hear you calling

Time to leave the road behind

I'll drive all through the night

To see your face at sunrise

Oh your love's calling

It echoes out across the sky

And I'll drive all through the night

To see your face at sunrise

I'll drive all through the night

To kiss your lips at sunrise

It was eighth grade

Young girls, bows and braids

Peeking in the window

At the boys in the gym

Declaring love we knew would never begin

But all that changed

With Robby James

Summer 1983

Down on Highland Avenue

The hot Memphis night

Was like fire in their bones

Promise forever to call each other home

Some things don't change

Like Robby James

Oh, we all want to grow up

And become somebody's someone

Oh, we all want to know

And be known like a love song

But the cynic and the critic

Come to rain on our parade

Drowning hope of one day

Finding Robby James

The years have flown by

At that first kiss never lied

Babies having babies and growing up fast

Proven’ ‘em wrong

High school love can last

Some things remain

Like Robby James

Oh, we all want to grow up

And become somebody's someone

Oh, we all want to know

And be known like a love song

But the cynic and the critic

Come to rain on our parade

Drowning hope of one day

Finding Robby James

Are we starting

Something we can't finish

I've been broken

No pretending

We're on a high wire

Full of tension

It's no circus

One slip it's ending

Tell me now, should I turn around

I don't wanna lead you wrong

I don't wanna love you blind

I don't wanna let you down

It feels different somehow

I don't wanna dim the lights

I don't wanna draw a line

Tell me now, should I turn around

Tell me now

Are we falling

Or floating

Holding

Barely touching

The air's heavy

Charged with emotion

I'm the thunder

Caught in your lightning

Tell me now, should I turn around

I don't wanna lead you wrong

I don't wanna love you blind

I don't wanna let you down

It feels different somehow

I don't wanna dim the lights

I don't wanna draw a line

Tell me now, should I turn around

Tell me now

Are we wrong

Are we right

Let's not waste time

Tell the truth tonight

I don't wanna lead you wrong

I don't wanna love you blind

I don't wanna let you down

It feels different somehow

I don't wanna dim the lights

I don't wanna draw a line

Tell me now, should I turn around

Tell me now

I don't wanna lead you wrong

I don't wanna love you blind

I don't wanna let you down

It feels different somehow

I don't wanna dim the lights

I don't wanna draw a line

Tell me now, should I turn around

Tell me now

Halfway in the ocean

Halfway to the stars

Caught between the motion

Of who we are and who we aren't

Halfway in focus

What's coming, what's been

Halfway through our story

You're my beginning and end

Hold my hand

Hold my hand

Hold my hand

In the middle

Halfway down a back road

With a million miles to go

Searching out a world

Of what we know and we don't know

Halfway through our silence

Where the truth begins to speak

Halfway through this heartache

Made us strong not weak

Hold my hand

Hold my hand

Hold my hand

In the middle

Hold my hand

Hold my hand

Hold my hand

In the middle

Caught between the cracks

Of here and now

There's a voice

Calling us out

What doesn't serve

Leave it all behind

Chart a course

To a love divine

Hold my hand

Hold my hand

Hold my hand

In the middle

Hold my hand

Hold my hand

Hold my hand

In the middle

Stop livin', livin' on borrowed time

Let's make the most of life, make it alive

While we've got breath and kickin' in our boots

One day we won't wake, it'll be over, said and done

Stop livin', livin' on borrowed time

Yesterday is gone, it ain't comin' back around

Tomorrow may never show, get caught between the cracks

Today we're burnin' daylight, c'mon soak up every drop

'Cause you can't save the sunshine for a rainy day, yeah

Stop livin', livin' on borrowed time

Let's make the most of life, make it alive

While we've got breath and kickin' in our boots

One day we won't wake, it'll be over, said and done

Stop livin', livin' on borrowed time

No one knows the future, fortune fades away

So grab that hidden cash, life's no layaway

It ain't all fast livin' find a lover with a slow hand

Get down to business, don't build castles in the sand

Stop livin', livin' on borrowed time

Let's make the most of life, make it alive

While we've got breath and kickin' in our boots

One day we won't wake, it'll be over, said and done

Stop livin', livin' on borrowed time

Stop livin', livin' on borrowed time

Stop livin', livin' on borrowed time

I'm not sure where I'm going

But I know it's time to leave

This old heart has its reasons

And it always takes the lead

I'll be gone by the morning

I'll be gone like a ghost

I’ve weighed my decision

And I know it's time to go

My brain tells me one thing

But it's never taught me to sing

So, I'll be gone by the morning

I'll be gone like a ghost

I'll be gone by the morning

I'll be gone like a ghost

Nothing good is coming

The writing is on the wall

Like a hummingbird

I'm searching for sweet nectar to soothe my soul

I'll be gone by the morning

I'll be gone like a ghost

I'll be gone by the morning

I'll be gone like a ghost

I'll be gone, I'll be gone

I'll be gone by the morning

I'll be gone, I'll be gone

I'll be long gone by the morning

Oh, I'll be gone, I'll be gone

I'll be long gone by the morning

I'll be gone, I'll be gone like a ghost

I'll be gone, I'll be gone, I'll be gone like a ghost

I'll be gone, I'll be gone, I'll be gone like a ghost

You don't know what you don't know

You can't see until your eyes are open

You don't know what another feels

’Til you walk in their shoes uphill

Everybody's facing something deep inside

Let's give each other time

We're all getting through

More than our stories

Every hidden bruise

We're all getting through

Every day is another chance

To see what love can do

While we're getting through

You hold tight to what you're taught

Then life comes and opens up your heart

Things look different far away

A little closer black and white turns gray

Sometimes we're just afraid

To look another in the face

What the reflection might say

We're all getting through

More than our stories

Every hidden bruise

We're all getting through

Every day is another chance

To see what love can do

While we're getting through

All the years have helped me see

I'm more than my beliefs

Walking an unknown road

Back when I thought I knew it all

Life had more to teach my soul

Still learning what I never knew before

We're all just getting through

More than our stories

Every hidden bruise

We're all just getting through

Every day is another chance

To see what love can do

While we're getting through

Let it be love we shout

From the mountain high

Let it be hope we show

Along the way

Let it be light we shine

To those lost, lost at sea

Let it be love, let it be love

That leads us home

Let it be love we shout

From the mountain high

Let it be hope we show

Along the way

Let it be light we shine

To those lost, lost at sea

Let it be love, let it be love

Let it be love, let it be love
